About Symphony Swim

WHY ARE WE CALLED SYMPHONY SWIM?

Once upon a time, on a sunny afternoon, a violin teacher was instructing a private lesson to an eight-year-old.

While the eight-year-old proceeded to play Beethoven’s Bagatelle No. 25, the instructor witnessed the four-year-old sibling fall into the pool in the back yard.  Without hesitation the violin teacher ran outside and jumped into the pool as well.  Although the child was startled by being in the water suddenly, she immediately calmed down being in the arms of the violin teacher. The mother ran frantically outside, but was also at ease when she saw the calmness of the two in the water.

The violin music continued to play loud and clearly, as the violin student had not realized what had happened.  Because of the calmness in the siblings and the relaxing music, the teacher insisted on staying in the water, proceeding to teach the four-year-old to float.  In 15 minutes, the four-year-old, Katie, was floating all by herself and was excited to do so.

Amazingly, Katie had never had any swim lessons before, but was at complete ease, humming the song her older sister had been playing on her violin.  Days following, the violin teacher/ swim coach had been informed of how Katie would sing her symphonic song and gracefully kick to safety in the water.  The violin teacher also became Katie’s swim coach. Both children continued lessons for years which incorporated many more symphonic songs.

Katie’s mom swore it was the music that kept Katie calm and safe that day.
